October brings National Carers Week, a nationwide moment to recognise the more than 3 million Australians who provide unpaid care to family members and friends. It is a timely backdrop for this month's focus on Dial 3: Support for Parents and Carers, which explores how workplaces can play a meaningful role in supporting those who balance paid work with significant caring responsibilities.

In this session, we will look at what effective support looks like in practice, including employer funded paid leave for all employees regardless of gender, strong transition support and active encouragement for all parents and carers to access the leave and flexibility available to them. We will consider how thoughtful policies, inclusive cultures and well designed systems can reduce barriers, promote retention and build more sustainable work experiences for people in caring roles.

Participants will also explore how Dial 3 connects with other areas of the Nine Dials framework, influencing career progression, leadership capability, workplace flexibility and long term gender balance outcomes. As with all sessions in this series, the focus will be on practical steps, reflective questions and actionable strategies that can make a real difference.

About NAWO’s ‘Tuning into the Nine Dials’ sessions

NAWO’s Nine Dials for Gender Balance outline the areas we know can ‘turn the dial’ on gender balance in operations. Each month we’ll be exploring a Dial in detail, starting with a deep dive session on the first Thursday of the month. These online events will focus on what organisations can do to ‘turn up’ the dial, and how NAWO can support.
